Symbiosis Entrance Test is one of the most sought entrance examination for law students with CLAT and AILET. Students who are appearing for CLAT generally also go for Symbiosis Entrance Test. In fact over the years it has been seen that many students prefer going for Symbiosis Law School Pune rather than getting admitted in a low-rank NLU. This exam provides an opportunity to be part of Symbiosis International University, by providing admission in Symbiosis Law School Pune, Symbiosis Law School Noida and Symbiosis Law School Hyderabad. It offers admission to five-year integrated B.A.LL.B and B.B.A.LL.B., separate merit lists are made for both the courses, the cut-offs are different and the choice of the course has to be made at the time of application. Students sometimes waste a lot of time thinking about which course to chose, choosing B.A.LL.B or B.B.A.LL.B does not really matter, choice should be made as per the interest of the student.
Now preparing for SET can go hand-in-hand with preparation for CLAT, because of similar areas being tested, both are aptitude based examinations. Since no extra efforts are required to prepare for SET, a student should not miss the opportunity for SET. Keeping up with the trend of knowing your exam first, the following needs to be done to crack SET:
STEP 1: KNOW YOUR EXAM
Since the notification for SET 2017 has not yet been issued by the university, all the dates mentioned are tentative. They have been calculated by seeing the trends of past years and personal experience (I have been a law aspirant and cracked SET). Please be up-to-date with the dates and notifications.
The online application procedure for SET begins in first week of February and closes around second week of April. The payment can be made online. The documents required are photograph, signature and others the same required for CLAT and AILET. Please keep a scanned copy of your documents, they will always be a help, even in the future. Detailed procedure can be checked from the website with examination fees.
Registration begins: 1st week of February
Registration closes: 2nd week of April
Exam Date: Most probably first Saturday of May, that is, May 6, 2017. As has been the trend a day before AILET, please keep this fact in mind while choosing the examination centre.
The paper is conducted in offline mode or to sound fancy its a pencil-paper based exam. Symbiosis has never come up with surprises, before going for the exam you can very well expect the level of paper and the kind of questions that one needs to tackle during the exam. In a time frame of 150 minutes, 150 questions have to be attempted with no negative marking. Now this is just the written exam, once you clear the cut-offs for written exam, a Written Ability Test and Personal Interview is conducted by the university. At present you don’t have to worry for it, and with minimum writing ability and speaking skills, its easy to clarify the PI-WAT (I did it, even you can). The paper has following sections:
Logical Reasoning: 30 Marks
This section comprises of questions testing logical thinking and ability. This section includes questions involving decision making and comprehending capabilities. The questions are of moderate difficulty. Questions might include short passages and sentences which had to be answered by thinking critically.
Legal Reasoning: 30 Marks
This section involves questions wherein a principle is provided and a probable solution has to be provided, by applying that principle in a fact situation. It may also include questions testing general awareness about law.
Analytical Reasoning: 30 Marks
This section tests the logical ability of a student. It comprises questions which involves numbers and other calculations but with logical assessment.
Reading Comprehension: 30 Marks
This section tests reading ability of the students, a comprehension passage followed by 5-9 questions is given. Student has to read the passage and answer the questions accordingly.
General Knowledge: 30 Marks
This section involves questions both on current affairs and general awareness. The questions involve areas of Geography, History, Science and Economics. Overall it tests knowledge of recent happenings and static general knowledge.
STEP 2: RIGHT PREPARATION
Lets start with the positives of the exam, it includes 150 questions to be attempted in 150 minutes without any negative marking. This means one minute per question which means a lot more than CLAT. Therefore, attempting all the questions and that too with fair accuracy becomes an easy task (I can assure this!! Experience!!).
Further moving to section-wise preparation, for logical reasoning and analytical reasoning books are available in the market and questions are also available online. Accuracy can only be achieved with practice; there is no substitute to it. This can also be said for legal reasoning, no specific knowledge of law is required. Students waste a lot of time reading actual law but that is not required. As a law aspirant I never studied law and attempted all the questions by my logical decision making, and I did crack CLAT and SET too, so you can trust my advice. Questions of general knowledge require regular studies and being updated with recent happenings. Not only that even knowledge of general awareness is tested therefore a book with compilation of all the required material of all the subjects should be referred. Further reading newspaper regularly is very-very important. It will help in both reading comprehension and general knowledge. Develop a habit of reading and increase your reading speed by reading articles and books regularly. Though a minute per question is enough time but then without practice you cannot even achieve that. Students preparing seriously for law entrance exams can only do the same easily. If you are planning to go to the exam hall and get yourself surprised then I can assure that you will be even surprised with your result, though you might have been a very intelligent fellow of your class. Attempting past year mocks and that too in a real time environment is necessary. Only practice and consistency can lead to success.
